Making Your Restroom ADA Accessible

Having a facility that is accessible to all types of customers is great for your business as well as required by the Americans With Disabilities Act. One area that needs the most remodeling to be compliant with this law is the bathroom. Here are some ways to make your restroom easily to be used by everyone.

Change Fixtures

Many older facilities have equipment that needs to be changed out for new. You should install a wheelchair accessible sink, the correct height toilets that are about two feet from either wall around it, and rails in the handicap stalls. The railing hung anywhere in the room should be about three feet off the ground and mounted securely so it can handle the weight of a human tugging on it. Towel racks and hand dryers must be mounted low enough for someone in a wheelchair to use.

Make Room

When you are plotting out the bathroom, be sure there is ample room for those with disabilities to move around. There should be at least five feet in the handicap stall for a chair to roll in and out easily. There should be a three foot by four foot space around the sink that is free of the door opening and closing.

Entering the Room

Depending on the location of your restroom, you may need to make adjustments to the doorway. If there is a step to get in and out, you will need to install a ramp whether it is poured concrete or built from a sturdy material. The door should be simple to push open with little force. If the current one is heavy or difficult to maneuver, you will need to replace it or install an automatic button. This allows a machine to swing it open for anyone who might have trouble doing it themselves.…
